What to Say When Someone Shuts Down

When someone you love goes quiet, the instinct is to fill the silence: ask more questions, offer solutions, explain why things are not as bad as they seem. Almost always, it pushes them further away.
Shutting down is often a nervous system response, not a choice. Pressure to talk keeps the threat level high. What helps first is lowering it.
Try being nearby without demanding anything. Keep your voice low and your sentences short. “I’m here. No rush.” Then let the silence be okay.
Conversation usually comes back once the body feels safe again. Your job is not to get them talking. It is to make talking possible.
